African Qualifiers for World Cup 2026: Tracking Cameroon’s Play-Off Journey
Cameroon fell short of securing an automatic place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after finishing second in Group D of the African qualifiers, just behind Cape Verde.
It was one of the biggest surprises of the campaign: the Indomitable Lions were outpaced by the Blue Sharks, who made history by qualifying for their first-ever World Cup. Despite showing flashes of promise, Marc Brys’ side struggled for consistency—losing 1-0 to Cape Verde and recording four frustrating draws in ten matches. A goalless stalemate against Angola on the final matchday was only enough to secure a spot in the play-offs.
Now, Cameroon face a do-or-die path to keep their World Cup hopes alive. They must first overcome DR Congo on November 13 in Rabat, before meeting either Gabon or Nigeria in the final just three days later.
Even if they advance, the journey won’t end there. Depending on FIFA rankings, the Indomitable Lions could still have to navigate one or two intercontinental play-off matches to clinch a ticket to next summer’s tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
