FIFA Unveils Official Procedures for the 2026 World Cup Final Draw

With the countdown to the first-ever 48-team FIFA World Cup™ entering its final stretch, FIFA has confirmed the procedures for the 2026 Final Draw, which will determine the makeup of the tournament’s 12 groups of four. The draw will take place on Friday, 5 December, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC, where coaches and officials from all qualified nations — and those still vying for qualification — will discover the path they must navigate to reach the final in New York/New Jersey on Sunday, 19 July 2026.

FIFA also announced that an updated match schedule, detailing the stadium assignments and kick-off times for every fixture, will be published on Saturday, 6 December.

Draw Procedure Summary

Under the confirmed guidelines, host nations Canada, Mexico, and the USA will be placed in Pot 1, alongside the nine highest-ranked teams according to the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking scheduled for release on 19 November 2025. The remaining 39 qualified teams will be divided among Pots 2, 3, and 4 based on these rankings.
The two FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament placeholders, along with the four European play-off placeholders, will all be assigned to Pot 4.

Pot Allocations

Pot 1: Canada, Mexico, USA, Spain, Argentina, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany
Pot 2: Croatia, Morocco, Colombia, Uruguay, Switzerland, Japan, Senegal, IR Iran, Korea Republic, Ecuador, Austria, Australia
Pot 3: Norway, Panama, Egypt, Algeria, Scotland, Paraguay, Tunisia, Côte d’Ivoire, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa
Pot 4: Jordan, Cabo Verde, Ghana, Curaçao, Haiti, New Zealand, European Play-Off A, European Play-Off B, European Play-Off C, European Play-Off D, FIFA Play-Off Tournament 1, FIFA Play-Off Tournament 2

How the Draw Will Work

The draw will open with all teams in Pot 1, which will fill Groups A to L. Pots 2, 3, and 4 will then follow in order.

Special ball colours will be used for the three host nations:

  • Mexico – Green ball (assigned automatically to A1)

  • Canada – Red ball (assigned to B1)

  • USA – Blue ball (assigned to D1)

These placements were already set according to the match schedule released on 4 February 2024. The remaining nine teams in Pot 1 will be placed in position 1 of whichever group they are drawn into.

Competitive Balance Measures

To ensure an even spread of top teams across the tournament bracket, FIFA has established two separate pathways to the semi-finals. The four highest-ranked teams will be handled with specific restrictions:

  • Spain (1st) and Argentina (2nd) will be drawn into opposite pathways

  • France (3rd) and England (4th) will be assigned similarly

This guarantees that the two top-ranked teams will not meet before the final — assuming both win their groups.

Group Assignment Rules

For Pots 2, 3, and 4, the group positions will follow a pre-set allocation pattern, detailed in the official draw procedure document. A team’s final position within its group will therefore depend on the pot it comes from and the group into which it is drawn.

To preserve regional diversity:

  • No group may contain more than one team from the same confederation, except UEFA, which will have 16 teams. Each group must contain at least one but no more than two European teams.

  • Confederation restrictions will also apply to the two Play-Off Tournament placeholders, ensuring that none of the possible play-off winners create a confederation conflict within any group.
