Haaland Leads Norway to 2026 World Cup Triumph
Norway confirmed their place at the 2026 World Cup in style, sealing qualification with an emphatic win in Italy that capped off a flawless campaign. Their spot at the tournament had already been virtually assured thanks to an outstanding goal difference, but the team chose to finish on a high with another statement performance.
After beginning their qualifiers with a commanding 3–0 victory over Italy, Norway wrapped things up with a similarly impressive result. Although Pio Esposito opened the scoring for the hosts, Norway responded brilliantly in the second half. Antonio Nusa levelled the match just past the hour mark, before Erling Haaland struck twice in quick succession to put his side firmly in control. Wolves forward Jørgen Strand Larsen added a late fourth to seal a remarkable evening for the visitors.
For Norway, the achievement is especially meaningful: it marks their return to a major tournament for the first time since 2000. And with Haaland leading the line, excitement is building.
Haaland’s brace in Italy lifted him to 16 goals in just eight qualifiers—double the total of any other player in Europe’s qualification phase. His overall record for Norway now stands at a sensational 55 goals in 48 caps, far surpassing Jørgen Juve’s long-standing national record of 33, which stood unchallenged for 90 years.
His form has been extraordinary, scoring in each of his last 11 appearances for the national team—a run that includes 21 goals, with 12 coming in his most recent four matches.
Next summer, Haaland will lead Norway’s promising “Golden Generation,” together with Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard, as they step onto football’s biggest stage with confidence and ambition.
